Every now and then the Catholics do something so fundamentally right that it takes my breath away! Here we see the Catholic Church at its best defending the last legitimate frontier of human and civil rights: Championing the rights of the unborn. I can be as annoyed as the next guy with the slowness and red tape inherent in the Catholic Church, and with their ill advised stand on American Immigration Law and general flirtation with the democrat party, but they’re the only mainline denomination that refuses to be cowed by abortion rights advocates. Consider some snippets from an Associated Press Article:
BALTIMORE — The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration.
In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.
And several prelates promised to call out Catholic policy makers on their failures to follow church teaching. Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pa., singled out Vice President-elect Biden, a Catholic, Scranton native who supports abortion rights.
“I cannot have a vice president-elect coming to Scranton to say he’s learned his values there when those values are utterly against the teachings of the Catholic Church,” Martino said. The Obama-Biden press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Along with their theological opposition to the procedure, church leaders say they worry that any expansion in abortion rights could require Catholic hospitals to perform abortions or lose federal funding. Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago said the hospitals would close rather than comply.
At the end of the day this generation’s ability to pretend that infanticide is “A woman’s constitutionally protected right to reproductive freedom”, must continue to be confronted and fought. You can call it a Christian issue or a moral issue or a human rights issue and the conclusion is the same: It’s not ok to kill a baby because you don’t feel like raising the child or because the father doesn’t appeal to you outside of the initial encounter that created the child.
Throughout the Baby Booms long and disastrous experimentation with traditional values and ethics no crime more egregious has been perpetrated on humanity more than legalized abortion on demand. Women need to practice reproductive responsibility that goes hand in hand, indivisibly with “reproductive freedom”. The Baby Boom generation has made the issue one of sexual freedom as they believe women should now be as sexually promiscuous and irresponsible as the men they used to condemn for such conduct.
Are we really saying that a woman has a “right” to look at an unborn life in her womb and decree that it’s not worth living and its inconvenient and must therefore be stuffed out without review or appeal?
The Church is finally giving the left wing “catholic” politicians a moment of pause and one can hope that such politicians will either leave the church or change their ways and be the Catholics they pretend to be. Our secular humanist society is no defender of life, either the unborn or when it pushes for legalized euthanasia. Just as abortion was a slippery slope that seemed to grow and expand each time the courts visited the issue I’m sure that Euthanasia would similarly become a widespread practice given the chance. If we lose on abortion, euthanasia will follow quickly and become a noble thing that older folks are supposed to do so as not to be a Burdon on the state or their families.
Thank God for the Catholic Church, ardent defenders of life, who have taken a wonderful stand in our decaying society for what’s right and for holding so called “catholic politician’s” feet to the fire. Bravo!
